HATCHED: NATIONAL GRADUATE SHOW 2019

Opening Night Party | Friday 3 May 6.30pm
Exhibition Continues | 4 May – 7 July

From 4 May, new graduates from across Australia will exhibit their work at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) as part of the 28th Hatched: National Graduate Show.

In 2019, PICA celebrates 30 years of supporting the development and presentation of experimental art forms. At the heart of PICA’s commitment to emerging arts practice is Hatched, which since 1992 has come to play an important national role, working with generations of artists as they take steps to establish themselves as leading artists with enduring practices.

Hatched 2019 brings together the work of 18 exceptional graduates who collectively demonstrate expansive forms of contemporary practice. In this exhibition, we encounter artists who examine the roles they play as impulsive or conscious consumers of materials and products as well as media and digital content. Other works are led by the processing of emotional and psychological spaces and offer glimpses of fragile yet enduring social constructs and precarious physical environments.

Throughout the exhibition, these artists assert the vitality of their cultural knowledge and social experience, providing an opportunity to appreciate a multiplicity of personal and collective viewpoints.

The works in this year’s exhibition display a depth of enquiry that is the result of years of research and application on the part of the artists and are a testament to the strength and rigour of visual arts education across Australia. Here we can also acknowledge the guidance of committed arts educators and the role they play fostering enquiring minds, encouraging material experimentation and imparting technical skill.

For the second year, PICA is pleased to offer a Hatched artist the opportunity to undertake a residency in partnership with North Metropolitan TAFE. Dennis Golding is a Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist and recent graduate from UNSW Art & Design who will be in residence at PICA across May and June.

We would like to thank the valuable contribution made by this year’s panel of industry leaders who undertook the difficult process of assessing applications and making the final selection of artists. This year’s panel included; Bruno Booth, Artist, Perth; Sandy Hsiu-Chih Lo, Chief Curator, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei; Melissa Keyes, Curator, Buxton Contemporary, Melbourne; and Eugenio Viola, Senior Curator, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2017- 2019), Perth.

This year also marks 10 years since the inauguration of the Schenberg Art Fellowship, which is presented in partnership with The University of Western Australia and UWA Cultural Precinct. This fellowship of $50,000 is presented to one outstanding Hatched artist and has grown to be the most significant award for visual arts graduates in Australia. This generous fellowship, made possible by the Dr. Harold Schenberg Bequest, offers recipients an unprecedented opportunity to make courageous strides and explore the potential of their talent.

North Metropolitan TAFE has for the second year supported Hatched by offering the opportunity for artists to undertake a residency in Perth. This program allows us to work closely with the artists and builds strong connections between interstate and Perth based artists.

Hatched will be launched in style with a huge party on Friday 3 May. A day of artist talks, panel discussions and exhibition tours will take place on Saturday 4 May as part of ‘Hatched Open Day’, followed by the launch of VAULT Magazine Issue 26.

Visitors can also experience ‘PICA After Dark’ during May with Hatched opening late until 8pm every Thursday from 9-30 May as part of City of Perth’s ‘Let’s Thursday like we Friday’ campaign.

Hatched would not be possible without the generous support of Major Exhibitions Partner the Minderoo Foundation.
