Nathan Beard’s practice draws inspiration from the various influences of his Thai-Australian cultural heritage. During this studio residency, Nathan will be working primarily with archival family photos discovered on a residency in Thailand in 2013 upon revisiting his mother’s neglected former home. He also hopes to conduct research into the local Thai community around Northbridge during his time at PICA. Exploring notions of memory, loss and nostalgia, this research will influence a new body of work for a solo exhibition in 2014.
 
BIO
Nathan Beard is Perth-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice is primarily engaged with exploring the influences of culture, memory and biography. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Art) with First Class Honours from Curtin University and his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Hatched 2008. His collaboration with artists Abdul Abdullah and Casey Ayres, The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, was presented at the NGV Studio for the 2012 Next Wave Festival the space between us wants to sing.
Nathan is a recipient of the Australia Council’s ArtStart Grant in 2013, and will be undertaking a JUMP mentorship with Thai artist Michael Shaowanasai in 2014.
