Friend World is a new project that responds to the transforming aesthetic of the Perth Cultural Centre. Penney will mimic Perth’s new sense of community constructed through veneers of brightly coloured paint, awkward sculptures, super-sized screens and decorated rubbish bins. Penney continues to use digital and 3D software to create virtual spaces, pixelated caricatures, bad puns, camp performances and vulgar jokes. Friend World is a place where cultural cringe will be exploited and celebrated!

The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere
Residency: 4 November – 31 December, 2011
The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere is a collaborative project between Perth-based artists Abdul Abdullah, Casey Ayres and Nathan Beard. The project is tied directly to each artist’s experience of being raised in Australia with the influence of an Asian parent. During the residency, the artists will be further researching and querying the model of an embassy space in order to fully explore, interrogate and critique notions of identity and cultural sensitivity in a globalised age.
The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere has been commissioned and developed through Next Wave’s Kickstart program and will premiere at the 2012 Next Wave Festival, 19-27 May 2012. This project has been supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria, City of Melbourne and the Margaret Lawrence Bequest.
Lauren Brown is a Melbourne-based installation artist whose practice is primarily concerned with sound in the public space. She holds a Master of Art in the Public Space from RMIT University and in 2011 has been a Geek in Residence at CIA Studios, Perth and an Underground Resident Artist with AURA Projects, Melbourne. She is currently in Perth for the Quiet Time Creative Lab with interdisciplinary performance company Reckless Sleepers, again at CIA Studios.
