Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion have created a world-wide following for their influential performance work, which defies genre with its mixture of intellectual rigour and unexpected humour. We’re thrilled to announce that the duo will be in Perth to perform a double bill Show & Tell and Body not Fit for Purpose in late April.
Burrows and Fargion have collaborated for over twenty-five years and continue to present their work all around the world, including recent major retrospectives in Lisbon, Porto, Philadelphia, Bologna and Barcelona.
“There’s a beguiling mix of the scholarly, the quizzical and the righteously indignant that is unique to Fargion and Burrows… the concentration of their work demonstrates how much expressive power even a small gesture, a tiny variation of tone or rhythm, can possess.” The Guardian, London
The evening begins with Show & Tell, a quiet meditation on the hidden influences that underpin the duo’s work. Burrows and Fargion compose a presentation of formative images and sounds as they examine what is absorbed and transformed, buried and disclosed, engaged and appropriated in the making of performances.
This will be followed by the artists’ most recent project Body Not Fit for Purpose, commissioned by the 2014 Venice Biennale and performed around the world. The piece unravels the link between meaning and action while raising uncomfortable questions in the midst of their laughter.
The duo focuses on opening a conversation with the audience, breaking down the fourth wall as they explore rhythmic relationships of ideas, gesture and music. These captivating works display innate intellect whilst redefining the relationship between dance and music.
Don’t miss the opportunity to see Burrows and Fargion’s acute and technically precise performative works. Show & Tell and Body Not Fit for Purpose is proudly presented by PICA in collaboration with Strut Dance.
