PICA is delighted to announce a two-year partnership with the Minderoo Foundation to support Australia’s most promising emerging visual artists through its Hatched National Graduate Show. The funding has supported the creation of a two year Curatorial Fellowship which allows an emerging curator to work closely with PICA’s exhibitions team to develop and deliver this landmark graduate exhibition. Miranda Johnson, emerging curator and writer, has been appointed as the inaugural Hatched Curatorial Fellow.

Miranda holds a BA in Art History from UWA and a Masters from Goldsmiths in London. She is the co-founder and board secretary of Cool Change Contemporary, a city-based artist run initiative; has been the Executive Officer of the Friends of the Festival; Screen Curator of both the Perth Cultural Centre and Northbridge Piazza screens; and is a visual arts writer for Seesaw Magazine. She will continue in the role until June 2021 in a mix of full-time and part-time capacity as the workload demands.

The Hatched National Graduate Show has been presented by PICA since 1992 and has launched the careers of countless leading Australian artists. Miranda, as Curatorial Fellow, will continue PICA’s work to ensure Hatched continues to generate significant impact in the Australian arts community and landscape. She will assist in the planning, administration and delivery of Hatched.

Under the direction of PICA’s Curator and Director, Miranda will be primarily responsible for research and liaison with artists, art schools and other key stakeholders. In her role she will work with other PICA departments across all aspects of the show, contributing to materials and activities for marketing, development, production and operations.

PICA Director, Amy Barrett-Lennard said, The Hatched Curatorial Fellow, supported by the Minderoo Foundation, will be a key role in PICA’s creative team, contributing to the successful planning and delivery of Hatched over the next two years. We are very grateful for their generous support.”

Mrs Nicola Forrest AO, co-founder of the Minderoo Foundation said, “I am thrilled that the Minderoo Foundation is able to support Australia’s most promising emerging artists through our partnership with PICA. We want WA to be recognised for its thriving arts sector, and we are always looking for meaningful ways to help emerging artists and arts workers gain professional experience. Minderoo believes that opportunities like this one inspire confidence across the sector by bolstering career pathways in the arts. The Minderoo team and I congratulate Miranda on her appointment, and we look forward to experiencing Hatched later in the year!”

Hatched National Graduate Show 2020 Opening Night | Friday 1 May, 6.30pm – 9pm
Exhibition continues | Saturday 2 May – Sunday 12 July
