At PICA access is a core part of professional working conditions. We are committed to creating programs, environments and ways of working that support artists to participate equitably and safely.
Access requirements may relate to physical, sensory, communication or process-related access needs, including support around time pressure, deadlines or information processing. Artists are not required to disclose diagnoses or personal health information.
Access planning is collaborative and responsibility for delivering agreed adjustments sits with PICA. We recognise that access needs may change over time and welcome ongoing feedback to support care, trust and sustainable artistic practice.
Access applies across all stages of engagement, including application and selection processes, contracting, development, installation or rehearsal, presentation, public programs and evaluation and feedback.

What does access mean at the application stage?
At this stage, access focuses on removing barriers to applying and participating in shortlisting or interviews. It relates to processes and communication, not artistic assessment. If you are unsure whether something counts as an access requirement, you are still welcome to ask.
Do I need to disclose a disability or diagnosis when applying?
No. You are not required to disclose a disability, diagnosis or medical information. Any access information you choose to share is used only to support your participation in the selection process.
Will sharing access needs affect my application?
No. Access information is kept separate from artistic assessment and does not influence selection outcomes.
What kinds of access adjustments can I request?
Examples include:
· Alternative application formats such as audio, video, Auslan or conversation
· Extended time for applications
· Accessible interview formats
· Captioning, interpreters or support people for interviews
· Preferred communication methods such as email, phone, SMS or video call
· Accessible document formats such as plain language, large print or accessible Word or PDF
How do I let you know what I need?
You can share access requirements through the application form or by contacting our Studio Manager, Maile Bowen maile@pica.org.au or (08) 9228 6300. You decide how much information to share and in what format.
What happens to my access information?
Access information is used only to organise adjustments for the selection process. It is shared only with staff who need it and is handled confidentially.
Can I ask questions about access before applying?
