Shaping the future of immersive art.
Conceived by the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) in Boorloo on the west coast of Australia, boorda yeyi takes its title from the language of this place – Whadjuk Noongar boodja – and means ‘future now’.
A first of its kind in Australia, boorda yeyi is an immersive arts program that will run annually over three years with the inaugural launch in 2025. It offers artists a pathway to explore the intersections of creativity and technology through a series of creative opportunities.
The program is for artists working in any art form. It is focused on familiarising, up-skilling and offering funded opportunities for artists wanting to introduce immersive technologies – such as VR, AR, AI, motion capture, projection mapping – into their practice. It is designed for artists who are digitally curious and those already literate in the immersive arts field.
boorda yeyi is informed by the artistic and cultural possibilities of new technologies for both artists and audiences. Grounded in PICA’s commitment to experimentation, sustainability and accessibility, the program is an invitation to artists to create works that challenge, transform and reimagine our futures.
The program’s title boorda yeyi has been developed in consultation with Whadjuk Elder, Dr Richard Walley OAM, and Whadjuk members of PICA’s Aboriginal Advisory Group.
