Regional Residency

Regional Residency

PICA’s Regional Residency provides space for regional artists to develop or research a project in Perth, creating new connections and relationships between artists and institutions in regional and metropolitan Western Australia.

In partnership with North Metro TAFE, the selected artist is provided with a studio at PICA and accommodation in a self-contained flat on the TAFE campus, five minutes’ walk from PICA.  

We encourage residency proposals from artists living in regional Western Australia of all disciplines that: 

  • push the boundaries of artforms through an engagement with contemporary practice 
  • are rigorous and ambitious in concept, form and approach 
  • contribute to current cultural and critical discourse and explore questions of our time 
  • seek to open a dialogue with audiences in new and innovative ways 
  • demonstrate a committed studio practice and is suitable to PICA’s studio spaces 

About the Studios 

The space available for this callout is Studio 2, which is: 

  • Approx 48 square metres 
  • Large windows with natural light (can be covered if required) 
  • Rendered and painted brick walls, 4.2m high 
  • Polished jarrah wood floors 
  • Overhead LED lights 

About the Apartment 

The North Metropolitan TAFE apartment is located on Beaufort Street, Northbridge. 

  • Secure, private apartment with locked entry gate at night 
  • 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 single) 
  • Kitchen with oven, fridge, stovetop, and kitchen items 
  • Living room with TV and wifi 
  • Bathroom with shower 
  • Laundry facilities (shared) 
  • Courtyard 
  • Bicycle 
  • Walking distance to Perth City, Northbridge, and Perth Cultural Centre 
  • Access to TAFE workshops and facilities (by negotiation)

Applications for PICA’s Regional Residency are now closed.

Eligibility 

The opportunity is open to artists of all disciplines based in regional WA over the age of 18.  Selected artists will be asked to provide proof of public liability and personal accident insurance before their residency commences. Unfortunately, children under the age of 18 are not able to be hosted at North Metropolitan TAFE. 

Selection Criteria 

The applications will be assessed by a selection panel, including PICA’s Producer and Public Program and Studio Manager. Applications are assessed on the below criteria: 

Artistic merit 
Demonstrated quality of your existing work and public and peer response to your practice. 

Impact on your career 
How the proposed residency will strengthen your practice and capacity as an arts professional. 

Suitability 
The suitability of your practice and your proposal to PICA’s studio spaces and the focus of the residency program.

2 May – 3 June 2025.
