PICA Open Day

To celebrate Open House Perth 2017 and the opening of our exhibitions Remedial Works and I don’t want to be there when it happens, join us for a range of free events – featuring artist and curator talks, poetry, storytelling, and music.

Strigiformes: Binocular, Binaural – Remedial Works Artist & Curator Talks
2–3pm
Head to our Performance Space for the Western Australian premiere of Clare Milledge’s work ‘Strigiformes: Binocular, Binaural’ followed by artist and curator talks for Remedial Works with Andrew Varano, Clare Milledge and Jessica Tan.

This program of events is presented in partnership with illUMEnate to showcase contemporary art and culture from Pakistan and India in relation to our exhibition I don’t want to be there when it happens.

3.30pm – Curator Talk
PICA Senior Curator, Eugenio Viola and Curator Kate Warren will discuss the many permutations and complexities of the experience of trauma and the relationship to art practice amidst the shadows of I don’t want to be there when it happens.

4pm – Keynote Address
Professor Samina Yasmeen will discuss how as individuals and the community, we move forward having had a shared history of trauma and loss.

4.15pm – Storytelling
Be part of a guided storytelling walkthrough the exhibition punctuated with stories and poetry drawn from original works by young contemporary storytellers and celebrated writers from the Partition of India and Pakistan. Works will be in English and Urdu – weaving the story of a shared history of trauma, loss and loyalty of a people with their ancestral land, and what it means to belong.

5pm – Music & activities
A variety of music and all ages interactive activities continue into the evening connecting Perth’s artistic and culturally diverse communities.
