AUCTION ITEM #4 ‘Baroque-Poussin’
Zoe Kirkwood, 2014, acrylic and oil on canvas, 121 x 91 cm.
Drawing on the visual language and the extravagance of Baroque spectacle, Zoe Kirkwood’s works bring together painting, sculpture and installation. A graduate of the University of South Australia with a First Class Honours Degree in Visual Arts in 2013, she received the Dr. Harold Schenberg Art Prize for her contribution to the 2014 edition of Hatched at PICA. Her painting, Baroque-Poussin, references the decorative carvings of the gilt frames that house iconic classical works. Drawn to the traditional craftsmanship and artisanal attention to detail in the woodwork, these intricate, but symmetrical flourishes have been blown up to create an enormous Rorschach style diptych. Obsessed with the Baroque and fanatical about Pop Art, Kirkwood flamboyantly layers the motifs and colour palette of both.
Zoe Kirkwood’s Baroque Poussin was made specially for the PICA Salon: Epic Narratives. It is currently the only painting of Zoe’s available for sale, all others having sold out from all her previous exhibitions. And there have been many – this year alone she’s had a solo show at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, on the heels of her New York premiere exhibition, Chromo-Spatial with Emma Coulter at CHASM Gallery in Brooklyn. Continuing Zoe’s success at Hatched in 2014 when she picked up the Dr Harold Schenberg Art Prize, she was offered a solo show at the highly respected contemporary commercial gallery of Hugo Michell in Adelaide, and then went on to present new work at Felt gallery, also in Adelaide. Now a year later, Zoe Kirkwood’s extraordinary work is back at PICA, curated into this exhibition as her practice is truly epic in reach, ambition and impact.
