At PICA we recognise that we are situated within the unceded lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation. We pay our respects and offer our gratitude to Elders past and present, and to those emerging leaders in the community. We acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the importance of their care and continued connection to culture, community and Country.

Always was, always will be.

Galleries are open today, 10am–5pm. Our exhibitions are always free.

TOM BLAKE, MIRANDA JOHNSON

BLEED: In Conversation

BLEED: In Conversation

BLEED exhibiting artist Tom Blake discusses the process of making leaves in the stream during his six-week residency at Treasure Hill Artist Village in Taipei. Taking place as part of PICA’s International Studio Exchange Program, this work was inspired by repetition and fragmentation which contextualises the artist’s observations of the ways people engage with digital technology through repetitive scrolling and momentary pauses.

Tom Blake works across drawing, video, painting and installation. His practice draws on momentary gestures, looped imagery and recurring motifs as potential sites for contemplating the psychological, architectural and technological frameworks that surround us.  He has exhibited in Australia, Japan and Italy and is represented by N.Smith Gallery.

Miranda Johnson is a writer and curator from Boorloo (Perth). She is a founding member of Cool Change Contemporary and was previously co-director of Moana Project Space. Miranda is currently Public Program and Studio Manager and was previously Hatched Curatorial Fellow at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA).
