At PICA we recognise that we are situated within the unceded lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation. We pay our respects and offer our gratitude to Elders past and present, and to those emerging leaders in the community. We acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the importance of their care and continued connection to culture, community and Country.

Always was, always will be.

Elena Betros Lopez

Quick Response Artist-in-Residence

Quick Response Artist-in-Residence

While in residence at PICA, Elena Betros López will develop her moving image work Abuela, a poignant exploration of the life of her Abuela (grandmother) Paulina during the Franco dictatorship in Spain. A series of intimate interviews will prioritise Paulina’s own account of her life in Spain which was marred by poverty, hunger and labour exploitation under the fascist system. The work will mediate on notions of extreme paternalism, fascist dictatorships, class wars, memory as it relates to trauma, collective resistance and cultural dislocation/loss through migration.

About the artist

Elena Betros López is a Naarm (Melbourne)–based maker of experimental moving images and a writer of poetry. She works with embodied approaches in language and moving images, weaving biographical references with theoretical and empirical research of place and ecologies. Her practice employs experimental approaches to moving images and language to interrogate existing social formations and deepen ecological connections. Elena has an interest in standpoint feminisms, Marxist feminisms, the politics of location, eco-feminisms, feminist posthumanisms and anarchist socialisms.
