In her Quick Response residency at PICA, Emily Rose will build on her 2025 residency at Goolugatup Heathcote, which explored motherhood, birthing and the cultural practices surrounding these experiences. She will draw on her own experiences as a mother as well as research into the lives of her ancestors, particularly her great-great-grandmother who was a stolen girl. 

Through research into library archives and family knowledge she will explore the laws in Western Australia that required Aboriginal families to seek written approval to be married. Her new body of work will respond to this history while reflecting on present-day freedoms, to explore the intersections between agency, cultural continuity and emotional connection.
