In 1992, PICA presented an exhibition of graduate work from almost all Australian art colleges, in recognition of the important link between art training and contemporary art practice, and providing insight into the how artists are trained and what artworks they make as a result of that training.

The National Graduate Show 1992 concentrated, for the most part, on two dimensional work – sculpture and installations being more difficult and expensive to transport interstate.

The forum on art education, which took place in tandem with this exhibition, focused on ‘the how’ of the training, the exhibition centred on the ‘what’ i.e. the work of the graduates. Taken together, these two elements gave an insight into the present state of play and indicated possible futures.
PICA asked that each national institution select four works from their end-of-year exhibition to show in Perth. The ‘National Graduate Show’ of student work comprised those choices. In showing finished work, PICA hoped that the selected graduates would benefit from a public showing that, for most, would be a first step in their professional lives.

More than 5,000 members of the general public attended this exhibition, an indication of support for the future and an acknowledgement of the standards set and achieved.

The National Graduate Show 1992 was sponsored by 96FM and X-Press magazine. Thanks too to the institutions for their financial and moral support. For this exhibition, PICA gratefully acknowledged the curatorial efforts of Belinda Carrigan and Matthew Ngui, Campbell Cornish and his TAFE students, for their help with the installation of the exhibition. The Visual Art Foundation, which underwrote the proposal for a national graduate show when it was first presented to them in 1989, made this project possible.
