Hatched: Healthway National Graduate Show ’95 was the fourth national survey of recent graduates from tertiary arts institutions around Australia and provided a unique opportunity for artists recently hatched from their respective institutions to have their work viewed within a supportive, professional and critical context. This exhibition and the accompanying forum program had expanded and developed since the exhibition’s inception to become an integral part of the Western Australian art calendar.
There was a celebratory aspect to this exhibition, created as it is by artists, who as Peter Mudie (UWA) notes so succinctly, are “trembling on the brink of something else” (p.47). The National Graduate Show was important because of its celebration of the idiosyncratic, the speculative and the imaginative in tandem with the skilled and the critical.
PICA worked with the major sponsor for this project, Healthway, the Western Australian Health Promotion Fund and the Family Planning Association. PICA thanked Dr Mike Jones, Chairperson of the Health Advisory Committee and Deputy Chairperson of the Healthway Board, for launching “The Art of Prevention”, a new brochure addressing the prevention of STD’s, for his participation.
PICA also thanked the Western Australian Minister for the Arts, The Honourable Peter Foss, MLC for opening the exhibition.
X-Press Magazine was an ongoing supporter the National Graduate Show, along with Schweppes, EM Complete Printers, Lumiere Cinemas, RT FM and Southcorp Wines. PICA also thanked Purvisonic Sound who provided technical support and equipment.
PICA acknowledged the support and hard work of the PICA staff, particularly the work of Exhibition Co-ordinator, Belinda Carrigan and Japonica Sheridan acting in the position of administrative and exhibition assistant on this project, and Michelle Milton for Publicity, Marketing and Catalogue Design.
