Hatched 1996

In 1996, 50 graduates from 15 institutions around Australia were hatched at PICA.

The University art schools represented in this exhibition were located in both regional and metropolitan centres across Australia and whilst there was much common ground in their respective approaches to teaching and learning, approaches are also very much shaped by the specifics of place – from the wilderness of Tasmania to the outer suburbs of Sydney; the often cited isolation of metropolitan Perth or the very different landscapes of regional Queensland and NSW. For anyone interested in regionalism, this exhibition provided fertile ground for discussion and investigation.

The Hatched Symposium offered artists educators and the general public the opportunity to discuss issues and ideas surrounding the arts and arts education. In 1996, Hatched explored the complexity of issues pertaining to our understanding of research and development with reference to teaching and learning practice and theory in visual arts tertiary education.

Hatched 1996 included keynotes and forums from esteemed academics such as Professor Geoff Parr, artist, Professor of Art at the University of Tasmania and Executive Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, Professor Elizabeth Ashburn, Dean, College of Fine Arts, University of NSW; Associate Professor Anne Graham, Research Projects Unit, Faculty of Visual & Performing Arts, University of Western Sydney, Nepean; Derek Kreckler, WA School of Visual Arts, Edith Cowan University and Associate Professor David Walker, Coordinator of Graduate Studies, School of Art, Curtin University of Technology. Associate Professor David Bromfield and Bernice Murphy, distinguished Curator and Deputy Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney also presenteed papers as part of the Hatched Symposium.

Hatched: Healthwav National Graduate Show & Symposium 96 was the result of the hard work and commitment of an enormous number of people. PICA wishes to particularly thank the major sponsor, Healthway, the Western Australian Health Promotion Fund and the Family Planning Association.
