A unique event in Australia, PICA’s seventh Hatched: Healthway National Graduate Show provided an important forum from which to celebrate and contextualise the acquisition of practical, expressive and conceptual skills by Australia’s visual and fine arts graduates. Hatched offered an extraordinary overview of contemporary arts practice as created by emerging artists throughout Australia.

The artists represented in this exhibition were drawn from institutions in regional and metropolitan centres around Australia, from far north Queensland to Tasmania, from the ACT to Western Australia. Their concerns ranged from the personal to the global, encompassing a spectrum of ideas and possibilities. In contextualising this survey exhibition within the broader socIo economic, cultural and political landscape, PICA invited educators, critics and curators from the ACT, NSW, Queensland Victoria and Western Australia, to address some of the terms and conditions confronting artists, educators and critics.

During the accompanying forum, Mckenzie Wark presented the keynote address, in which he sought to recover some initiative in thinking through the terms, conditions and imminent future of art culture media and education. The two forums addressed respectively: the relationship between studio practice and teaching, whilst the second sought to explore the changing roles and sites of art criticism and the various expectations of artists and readers. The speakers in 1998 included included: Vivienne Bins, Robert Cook, Sarah Follent, Rodney Glick, Paul Moncrieff, Kevin Murray and Debra Porch. Ned Rossiter acted as Chairpersons during the symposium.

Hatched: Healthway National Graduate Show & Symposium ’98 was the result of the hard work and commitment of an enormous number of people. PICA thanks the major sponsor, Healthway, the Western Australian Health Promotion Fund and the Family Planning Association. Special thanks to X-Press Magazine whose ongoing commitment and promotion of the National Graduate Show was critical to its continued success.

Hatched 1998 was made possible through the support and hard work of the PICA staff, in particular, the Exhibition Officer, Katie Major, Michelle McMahon, Sanja Arambasic, Mike Nanning, Andrew Ho and Sarah Yukich. Honourable Peter Foss, QC, MLC, the Minister for the Arts opened the exhibition.
