The Hatched: Healthway National Graduate Show 1999 was the eighth National Graduate Show to be produced by PICA , presenting work created by 61 artists from 15 university art schools in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, the ACT and Western Australia

The exhibition represented a broad range of media utilised by contemporary artists at the time. Consequently the show focused on four broad areas: Multimedia/installation: including computer generated work, electronic media, digital imaging, interactive media, installation and time based art; Design: including graphic design. industrial and product design: Fine Art & Objects: incorporating painting, sculpture, print-making, ceramics and glass, jewellery and metal and Film & Video in a range of formats.

In 1999, the Hatched Symposim included John Barbour from the South Australian School of Art; Beth Jackson from Griffith Artworks at Griffith University in Queensland, Bruce James from the Sydney Morning Herald and ABC Radio National’s flagship arts program, Arts Today; Dr Benjamin Genocchio from The Australian newspaper, Linda Marie Walker, Editor of Broadsheet as well as local speakers including Dean Chan from the WA Academy of Visual Art at Edith Cowan University, Brenda Croft, the newly appointed Curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of WA and Grisha Dolgopolov, who teaches in the school of Media, Culture and Communication at Murdoch University.

Special thanks to X-Press Magazine whose ongoing commitment and promotion of the National Graduate Show has been critical to its continued success.
