This exhibition brings together new works by three emerging artists from across Australia. It is an opportunity to profile the work of Australia’s new talent, while celebrating the continual rise of video practice in Australia. Chris Bennie’s new work The Alien’s Back fits within the milieu of video works which, as the artist says ‘revisits the unremarkable to give it a quality of meaning it so rightly deserves.’ Using the flora, fauna, oceanic and geographical features depicted on Commonwealth coins, Perth artist, Erin Coates, constructs a fabricated landscape scene that traces a voyage through the history of colonisation and nation building. Completing this trio of new works is Heavy, an animation work by Melbourne artist, Viv Miller, in collaboration with composer Gareth Durant. ‘Heavy’ implies depth, profundity and complexity, qualities that inform our physical, conceptual and emotional experience of the world.
