Raras Sukardi

Quick Response Residency

Quick Response Residency

Raras Sukardi will spend their Quick Response residency at PICA developing Sounds Like Junk, a process-led project exploring the relationship between sound-making, sustainable craft and upcycled materials.  

Working across experimental music, installation and mixed-media collage, Sukardi will compose live soundscapes using found objects, DIY instruments, field recordings and discarded materials. 

Inspired by intergenerational experiences of migration, sustainability and hoarding, the project reflects on repair, reuse and creative transformation as forms of healing and community connection.

About the artist

Raras Sukardi is a Boorloo based wind instrumentalist, experimenting with improvised and noise music. She creates soundscapes that feel organic to her, often inspired by her Indonesian heritage and complexities of being part of the Asian diaspora living on stolen Country. 
 
Combining sound worlds that are earthy and otherworldly with coarse electric noise, Raras celebrates the unexpected. Using the (bass) clarinet as her main instrument, she works across a range of traditional Asian wind instruments, such as the Sundanese Tarompet (oboe) and Javanese Suling (bamboo flute)—as an extension of her voice, welcoming vulnerable melodies to weave in and out of electronic dissonances. 
 
Raras actively learns about decolonisation and anti-Western practices through her travels in Asia, recently performing in Yogyakarta, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Locally, she is involved in the Boorloo experimental music scene—performing and collaborating with local, interstate and international multidisciplinary artists and collectives. Raras is also currently engaged in clarinet teaching and a key member of exploratory arts collective WWIM who create spaces for emerging artists to make interdisciplinary connections related to improvisation.
