Sherry Quiambao

Perth-Makassar Artist-in-Residence Exchange

Perth-Makassar Artist-in-Residence Exchange

During her residency at Rumata’ Artspace, Makassar, Sherry Quiambao will develop her project Horizon: Habitat, which explores water as a metaphor for the fluidity of cultural identity and migration. Drawing on her experience as a second-generation Filipino/Australian, she will examine how material aspirations and consumerism shape identity and belonging. In Makassar – a city deeply influenced by its connections to water, migration and trade – Quiambao will investigate the environmental and cultural impacts of consumerism, drawing parallels between Makassar, Perth and the Philippines.

About the artist

Sherry Quiambao is a multidisciplinary artist of Filipino heritage, born and raised in regional Western Australia. She explores the connections between found objects, memory, cultural heritage and consumption. Through photography, sculpture and installation, she invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with possessions and their impact on self-image and status. Her work often addresses themes of identity, belonging and the intersection of culture and consumerism. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from Curtin University and has pursued postgraduate studies in art curation and secondary education. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Australia, the Philippines and the United States.
