Studio Booster

Studio Booster

In 2025, Performing Lines WA have collaborated with PICA to present the Studio Booster Program, which provides time, space and funds for four artists or groups to ‘boost’ a creative idea or project.  

Performed by a cast of three First Nations actors, ASK explores the complexities of family dynamics through a mix of magical realism and relatable narratives. The play intertwines tales of good and bad behaviours within a family, examining the consequences of choices and the cost of change.  

During this residency at PICA, the artists will refine the project’s script, deepen character development and extend the performance length. With aspirations for regional, national and international tours, ASK seeks to resonate deeply with diverse audiences while celebrating the richness of First Nations culture and storytelling. 

About the artist

Barbara Hostalek is based in Boorloo (Perth) who draws inspiration from her diverse cultural ancestry of Gija, Yawuru, Czech, Castellorizian and Territorian heritage; born and raised on Larrakia Country, she feels at home with beautiful Noongar Boodjar. Her theatrical playwright journey began in 2015 with Yirra Yaakin Writers Group, with plays Cracked (2015), Banned (2018) and Thirst (2025) produced by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company. ‘ASK’ is an independent production first brought to life through Ilbijerri Theatre Company 10 in 10 day writing opportunity, and explores cultural empathy and using contemporary First Nations perspectives of place, family and belonging. ASK has grown following The Blue Room Seasons 600 Seconds in 2023.
