An Internal Difficulty brings together seven of Western Australia’s most innovative artists to reconsider the figure of Sigmund Freud in relation to his domestic context. In 2013 the artists undertook a residency at the Freud Museum London, the townhouse in which Freud and his family settled after fleeing the Nazi occupation of Austria.
The Museum houses the late psychoanalyst’s extraordinary collections of art, antiquities, textiles, prints and furniture, and his library. Its centerpiece is Freud’s study and ‘the’ iconic psychoanalytical couch. The residency allowed the artists privileged insight into Freud’s final months and the resulting artworks represent a unique and intimate reconsideration of one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century.
