Volumes will see Brisbane-based artist Ross Manning fill the PICA Central Galleries with a series of breathtaking kinetic light installations.

Ross Manning (QLD) employs a fusion of low-fi, domestic and high-end technologies to create dazzling phenomenological assemblages. In response to the dramatic architecture of PICA’s central atrium the artist will install his largest-scale kinetic work to date. The galleries will be flooded with stunning colour washes as mobiles constructed from multiple coloured fluorescent tubes and simple domestic fans slowly spin in constant, seductive motion. Other mechanical mobiles will create ghostly spirals floating in space, slowly reaching points of tension and re-setting.

Inspired by Isaac Newton’s colour theory, Manning references the physics and concepts of additive colour mixing. His explorations also test the potential of dichroic glass and video projections, splitting the electronic image and creating layered installations of light, movement and colour. Featuring a new range of works, Volumes is an optically charged kinaesthetic experience.
