Get ready for metal pipes and speakers, subtle colour projections and scratchy cut ups: Decibel New Music Ensemble in partnership with PICA and Tura New Music present Camera Obscura.
Decibel is Western Australia’s new music group presenting acoustic and electronic instrumental concert formats, incorporating installation and improvisation. Camera Obscura is the final concert in a series of performances in PICA’s Main Gallery Space, and is part of Tura New Music’s 10th Totally Huge New Music Festival.
Camera Obscura celebrates music experienced in association with constructed image. Through television, movies, music video, games and live performance trends, the listening experience is often combined with visual action. This program looks at music that uses image as integral to its conception, construction and performance – from projected scores to huge objects built to produce sound. The concert features the Australian premiere of Marina Rosenfeld’s striking installation/piece Cannons, prepared in conjunction with the New York composer, a featured artist at the Totally Huge New Music Festival.
Camera Obscura also includes world premieres by ensemble members Lindsay Vickery and Cat Hope, Australian composers Austin Buckett (ACT), Samuel Dunscombe (VIC), and a commission from emerging Western Australian composer, Kynan Tan.
