Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) is pleased to offer the opportunity for creative practitioners working within visual arts, performance and/or interdisciplinary practices to attend a XR bootcamp facilitated by Frame Labs on Friday 30 July (10am–5pm).
The PICA XR CO LAB Bootcamp is a one-day intensive bootcamp for creative practitioners who are keen to explore their creativity in the new digital mediums of Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality, otherwise known as XR (eXtended Reality). The XR Bootcamp will provide artists with a thorough understanding of XR mediums, how work is created, and where and how they can present that work for global audiences. The day will also involve talks by leading artists working in these mediums, as well as demonstrations with VR and AR tools and equipment.
Bootcamp participants will also be invited to apply for a two-day Hackathon in August at PICA to develop an idea to share at PICA during the XR:WA Festival in September. See below for more information.

XR HACKATHON: 28 & 29 AUGUST, 8.30AM-5.00PM at PICA
Co-hosted by Immerse Australia and Voyant AR
Bootcamp participants will be invited to submit concept proposals for a 2-day XR Hackathon, to be held at PICA on Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 August. Selected participants will gain hands-on experience and assistance to bring their concept to life, working in small teams with a technical artist/animator and 3D developer. The Hackathon will provide artists with practical experience in the XR development process including technical setup, software/hardware requirements, rapid prototyping and workflow to create a functional prototype.
The projects developed over the course of the Hackathon will be presented at PICA as part of XR:WA Festival (17 – 19 September). Hackathon participants will be paid a daily stipend of $350 (a total of $1,400, including 2 days pre- and post-lab support and assistance) and provided with expert production and technical support.

Natalie Marinho – Lead Producer, Chair of Immerse Australia
Natalie is Founder and Creative Director at Voyant Augmented Reality. As an Augmented Reality (AR) Designer with an insatiable curiosity for people and technology, she believes that immersive technologies represents the next major shift in human computer interaction. She is particularly interested in how AR can be used to enhance user experience and develop new modes of political and artistic expression. With a diverse working background including augmented reality, user experience design, gamification, and digital content production, Natalie has also been an invited speaker and panelist on technology, games and augmented reality. She is currently Chair of Immerse Australia, a member-driven association representing the interests of the immersive technology industry in Australia and a committee member of DesignFreo. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Psychology with a minor in Anthropology) and a Masters in International Relations.
Justin McArdle – XR Bootcamp Facilitator, Co-Founder of Frame Labs
Justin McArdle is an award-winning producer/director with over 20 years of expertise in transmedia production. After training in Interactive and Broadcast Media at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, Justin relocated to Australia from London and established Frame Labs with Gareth Lockett, to become an award-winning immersive media production company, specialising in interactive media, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). He has produced Time Window (2014), an AR project and winner of a 2014 Western Australian State Heritage Award, the short film Factory 293 (2014), winner of three WASA awards for Best Editing, Best SFX, and Best Production Design, ANZAC Tom AR (2015), winner of an INCITE award, Diggers VR (2015), a 2017 VR Fest nominee, and Is Australia Racist? VR (2016) developed for SBS television, in addition to working with indigenous writer/director Tyson Mowarin and acclaimed VR artist Stuart ‘Sutu’ Campbell on Thalu: Dreamtime is Now.
