Red Shoes

Red Shoes

Presented by ThinIce and Artrage in association with PICA

Your secret is your prisoner; if you let him escape, you become his…With his hallmark visual flair, Matthew Lutton transports Hans Christian Andersen’s most notorious tale into a swirling world of seductive songs and chilling imagery. A young man becomes obsessed with a pair of shiny red shoes. As they grow into his feet, he begins a hallucinogenic fall, which can only end in an unbelievable sacrifice. A potent mix of this master storyteller’s most revealing tales, Red Shoes exposes Andersen’s own peculiar fantasies, and our contemporary thirst for recognition and acceptance. Three of Perth’s most celebrated performers (George Shevtsov, Igor Sas and Brendan Ewing) transgress genders, eras and theatrical boundaries, to evoke a tantalizingly rich world where forbidden desires lurk in every corner.
