Yen Tzu Chang, The Anomaly, 2023, digital video

2023 is the first of a three-year residency exchange program between PICA and residency partners Taipei Artist Village (Taiwan) and Grey Projects (Singapore). In this program, two Western Australian artists are selected for an eight-week residency hosted by our residency partners; in exchange, PICA welcomes an artist from Taiwan and Singapore. 

Yen Tzu Chang is a new media and sound artist based in Taiwan. She combines art, programming, and technical media into her artworks, including interdisciplinary art and experimental performances based on sound installations.  

As part of her eight-week residency at PICA, Chang has spent time observing and connecting with Northbridge and the surrounding suburbs, including the local Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong communities. Chang presents The Anomaly, a projection and sound based work combining field recordings, projection mapping, live performance and a series of ink washed drawings that reflect on stories of Asian migration and Asian heritage in Australia.  

The PICA Galleries will be open from 5–7:30pm, with The Anomaly performance from 6–7pm.

About the Artist

Yen Tzu Chang is a new media artist/ sound artist based in Taiwan. She combines art, programming, and technical media into her artworks, including interdisciplinary art and experimental performances based on sound installations. Ready-made objects and DIY techniques are included in some of her pieces. She has delivered sound art performances/exhibitions and exhibited her works in many international conferences and festivals, including Ars Electronica Festival, roBOt 08 Festival, International Symposium on Electronic Arts, Digital Design Weekend in London, etc. Recently, she began to produce new media theatre, focusing on the integration of technology, text, and coordinating the overall operation and performance of installation and dancers.

Sze Tsang (they/them) is a nonbinary audio-visual artist and researcher originally from Hong Kong, now living in Perth/Boorloo, Australia. Their work explores the emotional nature of landscape, with a focus on their response to place. Their practice involves incorporating audio and visual elements of place into compositions, as an expression of catharsis through abstracted soundworks.  

Sze has performed and exhibited works nationally and internationally as samarobryn. Currently a PhD candidate at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University, Sze has spoken at international and national conferences and published writings on soundscape composition.
