Simon Pericich’s hysterical, dark brand of makeshift art production is concerned with the terrifying perception that humanity is irrationally selfish and detrimental. Traversing large-scale installation, video and image, his nihilistic dystopias act like an evolving epitaph and harbinger for a future that seems out of the control of its population.
 
Sometimes stemming from the autobiographical, sometimes making a detached commentary on consumer trends, Pericich’s practice forms transitory bonds between audience members and acts as a sarcastic invitation or platform to participate.
Pericich will approach his residency as an “awkward and somewhat emotional journey” reflecting on his experiences with video and sculpture. Pericich works rapidly, responding with immediacy to sites and location, drawing on his proximate surroundings to source found materials. He will apply this method as he navigates the detachment between a cultural and physical landscape of his past with the experiences of this same landscape in the present.
 
 
 

ABOUT THIS ARTIST
Simon Pericich is a Melbourne-based artist who grew up in rural Western Australia and lived and studied in Perth before relocating to pursue his study and practice further afield. This residency offers the occasion to revisit and reflect on the continuing influence of the social and urban landscape that shaped his practice.
