Consuelo Cavaniglia

Consuelo Cavaniglia

Consuelo Cavaniglia is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on how we see and understand space. Working across mediums, her work often employs technically simple visual effects to distort perception and unsettle the relationship between viewer and space. Interested in light and colour, Consuelo has undertaken residencies at NES, Iceland and FORM in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, to witness the extraordinary lighting and colour conditions in these contrasting environments. Increasingly interested in considering the space of the gallery as an environment, she has worked with lighting designers and experimental musicians to test how light and sound engage with materials and objects to affect the experience of a space and involve the viewer as an active participant in the work. As an independent curator Consuelo has developed a range of exhibitions including a major program of ephemeral artworks in public spaces. Interested in promoting artist communities she has established critical discussion groups, a curatorial studio visit program and worked in artist run spaces. Recently she co-founded experimental art space sydenham international and CUT N POLISH: artist car boot sale presented at Carriageworks. In 2016 she was the recipient of the Create NSW Visual Art Fellowship (Emerging), the inaugural Macfarlane Commission at ACCA in 2018, and the inaugural River Capital Commission at Gertrude Contemporary (with Brendan Van Hek) in 2019. Her most expansive project to date, seeing through you, is a solo exhibition at Chau Chak Wing Museum that engages with the collection, Museum staff and the building as a whole.

“What does Hatched mean to you?”

Hatched is one of the highlights of the national exhibition calendar that above all other programs supports and promotes emerging practices. As an independent curator I look at Hatched to see what voices are emerging. As an academic at UNSW Sydney, Hatched is the highpoint for our graduating students and an immense thrill when they are selected.

“How did Hatched help to develop your practice or career?”

Showing in Hatched was the first opportunity for me to show work in an institution that I then went on to be involved in for many years as an installer, gallery attendant, curatorial assistant, and finally coming full circle having a solo exhibition in 2016 in the same gallery I showed in when I was included in Hatched.
