Q&A with MKA: Being Dead (Don Quixote) star Kerith Manderson-Galvin

Q&A with MKA: Being Dead (Don Quixote) star Kerith Manderson-Galvin

Kerith Manderson-Galvin, the creator/performer of MKA: Being Dead (Don Quixote) caught up with our friends at The Blue Room Theatre for a chat about her upcoming show, irrational fears and Degrassi:

WHAT ITEM CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT IN THE REHEARSAL ROOM?

My computer. Because I’m working by myself I film myself using my webcam so I can see what I’m doing. I guess it comes out a bit blurry and in reverse and sometimes my head is missing because I don’t angle it properly, but I really feel like I’m working.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IRRATIONAL FEARS?

Geckos

Everybody hates me

You’re lying to me

And once for a couple of days- there’s a portal in my bedroom.

WHAT’S THE BEST SHOW YOU’VE EVER SEEN?

Degrassi New Class has just started and it’s really amazing. The episode I just watched has a character say, “we don’t talk about this stuff” and she’s talking about masturbation. There’s also a feminist club and a really beautiful episode on consent.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST EVER PERFORMANCE YOU WERE IN?

I guess this probably wasn’t the first because I would have been doing ballet by that time, but I was in the nativity play as an angel and I had a solo but instead of singing I cried. That might not be how the memory goes.

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

When I was little I really liked Judy Garland and all I wanted to do when I grew up was be like Judy Garland or probably I wanted to be with Judy Garland, but I remember making paper mache masks and mine was really bad. Maybe I thought, “I’ll never be a visual artist”, so I said to one of my classmates, “I’m going to be on broadway.”

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT PERTH?

The unknown!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT SUMMER?

Not wearing any clothes/understanding how to dress myself. Less IS more and the higher the hair the closer to god.

WHAT SHOW/S ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO DURING SUMMER NIGHTS OR FRINGE WORLD?

“Ze”: Queer as f*ck!

MKA: Unsex Me

Sleeping Beauty

queer, queer, fairytales.

I’m also allowing myself to see the movie Carol once my show closes, so that will be exciting. My dad hated it. I just think it’s important.

MKA: Being Dead (Don Quixote) starts in PICA’s Performance Space on 22 January, 2016,  presented by PICA and The Blue Room Theatre as part of Summer Nights and MKA | Theatre of New Writing, as part of FRINGE WORLD 2016.
