We’re thrilled to announce that the 2016 winner of the $35,000 Schenberg Art Fellowship is Selena de Carvalho from the Tasmanian College of the Arts, The University of Tasmania , for her artwork Ecological Haunts (ii). Congratulations on your win Selena!

Ecological Haunts (ii) physically engages the audience, using moss and clay buttons, when touched these samples activate an acoustic portrait including the sonification of internal sap flow or xylem (of a 10,500 year old tree), which is the sound of the tree taking in water. While it is a literal and immediate form of interaction, the micro audio rendered sonically perceptible via the recording device adds an element of the unfamiliar, mysterious and tactile.

The $35,000 Schenberg Art Fellowship is awarded to one emerging artists for career development. This is the seventh year that PICA has worked with the University of Western Australia and the trustees of the Dr Harold Schenberg bequest to present this generous cash prize to one outstanding Hatched artist.

The judges would also like to commend the following artists: Warraba Weatherall, Adam Anderson, Emmaline Zanelli and Louisa Magrics.
