Quick Response Residency

Germaine Chan’s Quick Response residency at PICA will focus on developing a new body of work building on her existing series Woe Woe Woe!, that explores biblical allegories through layered mixed-media paintings. This new collection will examine multiple ways of representing the human form as both archetype and witness within chaotic contemporary landscapes.  

Chan will develop her raw, intuitive painting practice alongside experiments with digital rendering, animation and interactive design. Through these processes, she will delve deeper into themes of faith, morality and existentialism within today’s climate of uncertainty, social fragmentation and spiritual anxiety.   

About the artist

Germaine Chan is a mixed media artist whose work investigates spirituality, faith and the complexities of human experience within contemporary life. Her practice reflects an intimate exploration of existential questions through digital and painterly mediums. Inspired by the traditions of religious painting and themes of divinity and the soul, Chan reimagines these motifs within a 21st-century context, creating layered compositions that blend history with contemporary aesthetics. Central to her practice is an inquiry into humanity in its raw, flawed state: yearning, fragile and often driven by self-gratification. By weaving together traditional iconography and experimental methods, Chan invites viewers into a dialogue about faith and the human condition, opening space for reflection and the search for meaning.
