For the 3rd Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth. PICA is proud to present I took a deep breath… , a selection of four artist project that respond to the 2007 theme of ‘stillness’. These distinct and ambitious projects showcase intriguing intersections between art, technology and science, and bring together electronic art practices from a range of leading Australian and international artists. Each work offers an engagement with the complex notion of stillness, providing a stimulating experience of contemplative and perceptual meditations and embodied experiences. Austrian artist, Ulf Langheinrich, will captivate viewers with the Australian premiere of WAVEFORM B, a multi-level, immersive audiovisual experience of the colour blue. Also premiering will be a work from German-Australian duo, BORIS + NATASCHA, which invites audiences to participate in a little self-help therapy via a tongue in cheek, guided meditation through social anxieties and phobias particular to the 21st century. The idea of stillness as an ingress to the mind-body connection will also be explored by Sydney artist, George Khut, in an interactive work that harnesses the stationary viewer’s heartbeat to create a kinetic work. This trio of experiential works will be further complimented by a site-specific sound installation from local Perth artist, Kylie Ligertwood. Located in PICA’s elevator, this newly commissioned piece will explore the transformative powers of sound and its virtual possibilities of flight as visitors travel from one gallery floor to another.
