At PICA we recognise that we are situated within the unceded lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation. We pay our respects and offer our gratitude to Elders past and present, and to those emerging leaders in the community. We acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the importance of their care and continued connection to culture, community and Country.

Always was, always will be.

Galleries are open today, 10am–5pm. Our exhibitions are always free.

Louise Rae

Quick Response Artist-in-Residence

Quick Response Artist-in-Residence

Louise Rae will investigate the effects of trauma, societal anxiety and chronic illness on women’s bodies through the creation of a surrogate textile human body. Through digital and material experimentation, she will examine how this surrogate reflects our current cultural perceptions of disabled, aging female bodies.

About the artist

Louise Rae is an emerging American/Australian artist and master’s student at Curtin University, residing in Boorloo (Perth). Her work explores the body in relation to the somatic and accumulative impacts of trauma occurring under patriarchal structures and attitudes that continue to harm women today. With an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, she is also interested in how technology and the female body interact in unexpected ways. Her work addresses her own experiences and engages in wider feminist discourse and sociopolitical tropes. She works in textiles, ceramics and other sculptural materials to explore these themes.
