During her time at PICA, Maraya Takoniatis will develop a speculative reimagining of the Greek Orthodox Church (GOC) based on recent scholarship about an ancient religion practiced by the pre-Christian Greeks. Using candle-smoke from GOC candles to produce her drawings, she will work to unveil the symbolic undertones of these religious instruments. Takoniatis will also experiment with the incorporation of additional religious elements such as incense and embroidered ceremonial robes to create a multi-sensory artwork that captures the transcendentalism of religious aesthetics.
