At PICA we recognise that we are situated within the unceded lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation. We pay our respects and offer our gratitude to Elders past and present, and to those emerging leaders in the community. We acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the importance of their care and continued connection to culture, community and Country.

Always was, always will be.

Galleries are open today, 10am–5pm. Our exhibitions are always free.

Melanie Hobbs

Quick Response Artist-in-Residence

Quick Response Artist-in-Residence

Melanie Hobbs will develop her next collection of stories that explore the experiences of women of colour in Australia. Inspired by fairytales, folklore and classic dystopian fiction, the monsters will be both real and metaphorical.

About the artist

Melanie Hobbs writes short fiction about the immigrant experience, internet culture and the inner lives of women. She was the recipient of a Centre for Stories Fellowship in 2022 and has had her work published in various journals and anthologies. When she is not writing, Hobbs is teaching high school English or wrangling her small children.
