momentum: A Mid-Career Lab for Experimentation

momentum: A Mid-Career Lab for Experimentation

momentum is a relational ‘call and response’ lab by pvi collective, supported by PICA. The lab is shaped by the challenges and hurdles faced by independent artists who are working to maintain momentum within their practice and communities.

momentum invites Boorloo-based mid-career and established artists to share the load and develop a creative pathway forward for their own work with their peers. The lab aims to be a vehicle for building collective power, sharing networks and generating meaningful connections that will last.

This year’s momentum focuses on international artist-to-artist exchange with special guest arts collective Sakatoya. Based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Sakatoya’s works investigate ecological discourse aiming to activate knowledge around the living relationships between humans and nature. Through live art, performance and experimental practice, Sakatoya engages in creative and collaborative processes with artists, cultural practitioners, institutions, and art collectives at both local and international levels.

momentum is open to a broad range of artistic disciplines and research interests, including live performance artists and makers from the expanded field of experimental practice. The lab is designed to be adaptive, responsive and non-outcome driven, leaning into camaraderie, active listening and shared resilience. Workshop sessions will be bespoke and structured around play tasks, creative group critique, quiet reflective time and occasional outings for inspiration.

pvi collective is committed to ensuring we meet the diverse access and cultural safety needs of participating artists and will work with you to determine how we can best do this.

Participating artists will:

  •  Join a cohort of seven mid-career and established artists (including artists from Sakatoya) for a week-long artistic laboratory based at pica, hosted by pvi collective.
  • Receive an honorarium including super in recognition of their time.
  • Be supported to identify and explore possibilities for their own projects and practices within a collaborative environment.

About the Artists

pvi collective is based in Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia. pvi is renowned for developing innovative, high-calibre, socially engaged artworks that seek to empower audiences to step out of their comfort zones. Signature works such as deviator, blackmarket and tiny revolutions call on audiences to get involved and imagine progressive change together, through playful actions on the streets and creative interventions that pack a societal punch. pvi believe in staying with the trouble; scrutinising it, investing in it and pulling it into focus at times when it may be easier to leave it concealed.

Over the past two decades, pvi has produced an eclectic body of work, grounded in critical rigour, informed by collaborative research and always foregrounding the experience of the audience. Performances and public interventions have included: bus tours, training videos, radio broadcasts, sticker campaigns, pub quizzes, think and do tanks, privacy services, tug-of-war contests, live-action board games, mock awards, community policing initiatives, environmental watchdogs and locative mobile media games.
