Quick Response Residency

Quick Response Residency

Natalie de Rozario will develop participatory and community-engaged methodologies during her Quick Response Residency at PICA. A Bag of Rice for a Saturday Child is an ongoing project exploring myth, ancestry and belief systems as frameworks for identity across diasporic and cross-cultural contexts. 

Working across drawing, painting, photography and socially engaged practice, the residency will function as a live studio for experimentation, dialogue and collaborative exchange.  

This residency forms a research and development phase for de Rozario’s upcoming project in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, foregrounding care, dialogue and community connection within contemporary artistic practice.

About the artist

Natalie de Rozario (b. 1993) is a Burmese-Australian visual artist based on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja (Perth, WA). Working across painting, drawing, photography and social practice, her work explores migration, matriarchy, myth and memory. Through investigating her Burmese heritage, Nat’s practice is both research based and process-led with a focus on how identity is shaped through cultural inheritance and belonging. 

Nat’s work is grounded in the complexities of diaspora and holds space for layered and often contradictory experiences. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Curtin University and has also undertaken artistic training at Kingston University, London and in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She has contributed work in group exhibitions, including at the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the University of Canberra. Nat was the recipient of the City of Canning Art Award (2022) and a finalist in the Lester Prize (2023).
