Open Studios: Djeran

Join us this Djeran season for PICA Open Studios, an evening with current artists-in-residence Gina Korompot, Wayne Lim and Rachel Arianne Ogle in conversation with Julie Ziegenhardt. 

Gina Korompot, visiting from Makassar, Indonesia as part of PICA’s BREEZE program—explores migration, impermanence and ideas of home through Makassan–Australian histories. Wayne Lim reflects on familial relationships in young adulthood, using archival photographs, home videos and new footage to explore migration, memory and belonging. Rachel Arianne Ogle will share on her ongoing performance practice—reflecting on place, presence and the human impact on the environment. In a conversation facilitated by artist Julie Ziegenhardt, the artists will discuss their individual projects, residency experience and the intersections between their practices.

About the artists

Gina Korompot is an illustrator and animator from Makassar, Indonesia. Korompot’s artistic practice focuses on storytelling drawn from personal experience, memory and restlessness. Working across diverse media including graphic design, comics and short films, among others, Korompot’s work is characterised by a recurring focus on class struggle, marginalised communities and identity. Having spent three years of her childhood in Australia, Korompot takes interest in Indonesian migrant experience in Australia, as well as the rich history of trade and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Wayne Lim Wayne is a documentary filmmaker and photographer based in Boorloo (Perth). Across both journalistic and personal projects, his work sits at the intersection of longing and belonging. His films have been awarded at the College Photographer of the Year competition and screened in competition at the Academy Award-qualifying Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (Japan) and the Singapore Youth Film Festival, among others. As a lens-based artist working with analog and experimental processes, his practice is grounded in an ongoing search for self and home.

Western Australian dance artist Rachel Arianne Ogle has had an extensive career as a dancer, performer, choreographer, educator, arts worker and producer. Ogle’s landmark work precipice was nominated for a Helpmann Award (2015) and shortlisted for an Australian Dance Award (2015), with Ogle also being awarded Best Choreographer in the Performing Arts WA Awards in 2020 (for the 2019 return season). In 2023, precipice was presented as part of Sydney Dance Company’s INDance season. Ogle’s most recent work And The Earth Will Swallow Them Whole had its commissioned premiere in Perth Festival 2022. Ogle was a 2022 Sidney Myer Creative Fellow and joined pvi collective, in the role of Company Artist, in 2025.

Julie Ziegenhardt is a South African-Australian multi-media animator, illustrator and educator living in Boorloo, WA. She is interested in the in-betweenness of things – where they collide, and how they mix, interrogating themes of dislocation within the body and the home through her work. Collaboration with artists and researchers across disciplines is instrumental to her practice, resulting in explorations that range from live performances to exhibitions, workshops, films and games. These collaborative investigations are fostered by local arts organisations such as PICA, WWIM, pvi collective and Propel Youth Arts, where she is grateful to find meaning in a community of curiosity-led exploratory arts practices and practitioners.
