For our first open studio of the year, performance-maker and writer Andrew Sutherland will be in conversation with studio artists Ailsa Waddell and Michelle Aitken & Joe Lui.
Ailsa Waddell’s latest project love ur loops; (it won’t go on forever) is an evolving reflection on their fixations and loops as someone living with ADHD.
Showy McShowface is an experimental performance work by performance artist Michelle Aitken and director, writer, sound and lighting designer, Joe Lui. A part live theatre and part expansive internet experience, inspired by stories of companies running online polls to name things going horribly wrong.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Michelle Aitken and Joe Lui | Studio artists
Michelle Aitken (she/her) is a maker and performer working across dance and theatre in Boorloo (Perth). She has worked with companies including Renegade Produc9ons, Squid Vicious Theatre, pvi collec9ve, and STRUT Dance, and is a frequent collaborator on independent projects. Michelle presents work under the nom de guerre Hey! Precious, including the award winning solo Future’s Eve (2018), and Unrule (2019). Michelle is also an AV designer for performance, and can be found on YouTube as her science-communicator alter-ego, Michelle From Perth.
Joe Lui (he/him) is a founding member of Renegade Productions. Within its aegis he creates, writes, directs, designs and composes theatre and performance works. His most recent work was Unsung Heroes, which was presented online as part of Black Swan State Theatre Company’s 2020 season. Joe Lui is the Spirit of the Fringe World and a submerging artist. Lui is also a part of the professional and independent theatre industry in Perth as a director, writer, and a sound and lighting designer. he has worked with most Perth based companies including BSSTC, Perth Theatre Company, Yirra Yaakin theatre company and the vast majority of independent companies.
Ailsa Waddell | Studio artist
Ailsa Waddell (they/she) is a Boorloo based artist who grew up in the Noongar region Yued (Moora). They like to work with soft materials like wet cement, slime and glue, often in response to her fixations and loops as a person with ADHD. They like materials that feel good, and find themselves getting stuck using the same material, or printing and drawing the same thing over and over again. Recently she has been directly responding to the effects ADHD has on their interpersonal relationships. ADHD is often only ever seen within extremities ( a superpower or a nuisance), with very minimal discussion on how it affects someone’s everyday existence.
