Quick Response Residency

Quick Response Residency

Renee Newman and Ella Hetherington will undertake a Quick Response residency at PICA developing Catastrophes 2.0, a participatory community arts project transforming discarded textiles into a collective, evolving artwork. 

Working collaboratively, the residency focuses on stage 2 of the project, centred on studio-based experimentation, practice sharing and development planning. The project explores themes of care, fragmentation and resilience in response to contemporary conditions of crisis.  

This residency builds on Newman and Hetherington’s first live work, Catastrophes, which was supported by and premiered at PICA. 

About the artists

Renée Newman is an educator and performance maker working across contemporary performance, site specific and audio performance and dramaturgy. Her recent works include Catastrophes, Seeking Basic Needs and Other Tales of Excess, Virgie, Sleeping Beauty and Crossings, alongside dramaturgical projects including Slow burn together, I Feel Fine and Beginning at the End. Renée is Senior Lecturer at WAAPA, Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Creative and Performing Arts (Honours) and Associate Dean (Research). She has published in journals including Performance Research.

Ella Hetherington is an independent multidisciplinary performance maker, facilitator and producer. She has collaborated with Black Swan State Theatre Company, The Last Great Hunt, ERTH, Force Majeure and Legs On Wall, and internationally with La Fura dels Baus and Frantic Assembly. Her work tours nationally and internationally, with commissions from WASO, WA Maritime Museum and Black Swan. Ella lectures at WAAPA and is Creative Programs Lead at the City of Cockburn.
