Hatched Artist-in-Residence 

Presented as part of Hatched: National Graduate Show 2026, the Hatched artist-in-residence program offers a residency to one WA-based and one interstate artist in the Hatched exhibition. This opportunity provides time, space and a new context to develop their practice, embark on new projects and be a part of PICA’s creative community.   

During his time at PICA, Thomas E. Brown will explore semi-sculptural structures as a specialised mode of installations for paintings, creating a series of quick and experimental works.

About the artist

Thomas E. Brown is a Boorloo/Perth based painter, currently studying at Curtin University. Thomas’ practice is an extended meditation on identity fetishisation, centered on intuitively painted biographical works. They employ traditional painting techniques and use an air-brush to construct ambiguous anatomical scenes. Inspired by illustrated erotica, their work incorporates the aesthetics of sex to destabilise conventional readings of the body; engaging in the thematic territory of desire, shame, perversion and love. As an extension of their practice, Thomas also makes multi-media works, occupied with the intersection of memetic culture and sexuality.
