PICA is delighted to present a writers-in-residence collaboration with ARTERY Magazine during this year’s 2026 Hatched: National Graduate Show.
Four early-career writers will be selected to undertake a month residency in a shared studio at PICA to develop new work to be published in issue #5 of ARTERY Magazine. Selected residents will be invited to respond to works from this year’s Hatched exhibition.
The residency is designed for early-career writers who may not yet have institutional affiliation, regular publication platforms or access to a dedicated writing space. The residency prioritises time, experimentation and the development of a sustained writing practice with support from PICA and ARTERY Magazine.
ARTERY is an ekphrastic magazine for emerging writers and artists based in Boorloo.

About the Studio
Studio 0 is approximately 38 square metres and includes:
- Large windows with natural light (can be covered if required)
- Rendered and painted brick walls, 4.2m high
- Polished wooden jarrah floorboards
- Overhead LED lights (additional lamps can be provided on request)
- Mobile heating and cooling are provided in this space along with furniture
- Due to proximity to Picabar, the sound from below is audible during opening hours.

Eligibility
The opportunity is open to early-career writers over the age of 18. While interstate applicants are welcome to apply, please note that PICA is not able to support travel or accommodation costs for this residency. Access requirements, questions or conversations are separate from eligibility and assessment.
Selection Criteria
The applications will be assessed by a selection panel, including ARTERY Magazine editors and PICA’s Public Program & Studio Manager.
Applications are assessed on the below criteria:
- Demonstrated quality of your existing work (published or unpublished)
- Impact on your career
- How the proposed residency will strengthen your practice and capacity

Access
At PICA, access is a core part of professional working conditions. Creative practioners come from many lived experiences and identities, and we are committed to making our programs and application process as accessible as possible.
Applicants are welcome to share any access requirements that would support them to apply or participate in our programs. Access requirements may relate to physical, sensory, communication or process-related access needs, including support around time pressure, deadlines or information processing. Applicants are not required to disclosediagnoses or medical details.
Access conversations are voluntary, practioner-led and separate from selection. Any access information shared is kept separate from assessment and is only shared with staff responsible for coordinating access. Sharing access requirements will not affect artistic assessment.
