Join Ayesha Singh, Cross-Hatchings: New Delhi-Perth artist-in-residence for a special open studio event at PICA.

To remember
To hold
To carefully acknowledge

Singh invites you to explore her studio, where lines, movement and words come together in an intimate gathering. During her residency, she has been researching the colonial transformations and urbanisation of Perth, focusing on how these elements influence architectural facades and ornamentation. This research has been accompanied by personal stories shared by local historians, artists, urban planners and cultural practitioners.

Visit Studio 2 to discover parts of her research and her ongoing exploration of encounters, examining how memory, context, and histories influence our individual and collective experiences.

Schedule:
11 am – 1 pm Open Studio
3 pm – 4 pm Participatory encounters – group discussion (RSVP required)

About the artist

Ayesha Singh examines built architecture as spaces that embed power dynamics, expose the intricate politics inherent in nation-building exercises, migration, displacement, and function as a location of identity – embodying aspiration, desire, and belief. Through critical spatial interventions that emphasise collaboration and coexistence her works aim to counter established narratives to unpack layers of alteration and erasure of history through construction, restoration, and destruction. This results in their research being experienced through participatory performances with poetry, kinetic sculptures, sculptural line-drawings, public installations of scaffold and images that are created with community involvement, video, sculpture and often graphite drawings on paper.
