Hatched 2026 artists Thomas E. Brown (WA) and Sydney Jarrett (NSW) are spending the month of August in the PICA studios, exploring new material and conceptual avenues of their practice through research and experimentation. Join us on Thursday 27 August to see works in progress and hear from the artists in a panel facilitated by Paul Boyé. About the artists

Sydney Jarrett is a multi-disciplinary artist working on Gadigal land. His sculptural and performance-based practice explores materialities of public space, investigating relationships with authority, regulation and compliance. He completed his Honours in Fine Arts at UNSW Art and Design in 2025.

Thomas E. Brown is a Boorloo/Perth based painter, currently studying at Curtin University. Thomas’ practice is an extended meditation on identity fetishisation, centered on intuitively painted biographical works. They employ traditional painting techniques and use an air-brush to construct ambiguous anatomical scenes. Inspired by illustrated erotica, their work incorporates the aesthetics of sex to destabilise conventional readings of the body; engaging in the thematic territory of desire, shame, perversion and love. As an extension of their practice, Thomas also makes multi-media works, occupied with the intersection of memetic culture and sexuality. 

Paul Boyé is a writer and curator living in Boorloo (Perth, WA). They are the Curator at Goolugatup Heathcote, and Lecturer in Art History and Curatorial Studies at the University of Western Australia. Paul is on the directorial committee of Cool Change (an artist-run organisation based in Boorloo), and has recently worked at un Projects (Online Editor) and John Curtin Gallery (Assistant Curator).
